New Foundland Dog Crossed With St Bernard

A study achieved asthma associated with celiac disease Celiac Association Argentina

NEW YORK - People with celiac disease are more likely to develop other immune system disorder: asthma.

A team of European researchers found that people with celiac disease were 60 percent more likely to develop asthma than people without the digestive disorder.

In fact, the team estimated that 100,000 people with celiac disease, 147 have not had developed asthma if they were not celiac.

And in the study, participants with asthma were also more likely to develop celiac disease, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Celiac disease occurs in an abnormal immune response to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and other foods. This reaction prevents them from those who suffer from eating cereal, pasta, crackers and beer, among other things.

The condition affects 1 percent of the population and can cause fatigue, weight loss and bone loss.

team Dr Jonas Ludvigsson, Orebro University Hospital and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, compared to more than 28,000 Swedes with celiac disease diagnosed in more than 140,000 people without the disease.

Ludvigsson explained that the results will only reveal the relationship between both diseases and do not prove that one causes the other. Also unknown is the explanation for this association. "I think it would be reinforced the role of vitamin D deficiency," he told Reuters Health.

celiac People are more likely to develop osteoporosis and tuberculosis, two diseases in which vitamin D influences

If a patient also has low levels of the vitamin in the body, this would alter the immune system, raising the risk of developing asthma, Ludvigsson explained.

"Another possible mechanism might be that asthma and celiac disease share some immunological cross. Whoever does, will risk for both disorders," he added.

People who are diagnosed with celiac disease are recommended a gluten free diet. It is unknown whether the 28,000 patients studied met or not such an indication.

"In general, monitoring of dietary recommendations is high in Sweden, so that we can conclude that even patients with good adhesion could developing asthma, "said Ludvigsson. (Reuters Health)
